What Does it Mean to be Strengths Based?
Firstly, when we talk about strengths, we’re not just talking about physical strength, though that can be part of it. Someone’s strengths could also include their;
knowledge
abilities
capacities
skills
experience
Strengths are what I like to think of as someone’s ‘everyday superpowers‘- maybe not flying or telekinesis, but everyone has something they’re super good at. I see it as a case of finding it. That’s where strengths based practice comes in. The strengths based approach seeks to identify and focus on an individual’s unique strengths as opposed to their weaknesses- in some ways, it’s an antidote to the more weakness/ deficits focused medical model. Strengths based support may explore how an individual’s strengths could be used as coping tools, or integrated into coping mechanisms.
At Illuminating Insights, we treasure the privilege of supporting you to identify your everyday superpowers, whatever they may be, and starting to learn to harness them to your advantage.
