Biases
Biases may be described as a tendency toward or against something. A negativity bias is a tendency toward negativity- individuals with negativity bias are more attuned to adverse experiences, including a tendency to dwell on these negative experiences and remember them more easily. A positivity bias, by contrast, is a tendency toward the positive, including having a generally optimistic outlook and expecting good things.
Biases can also come up in relation to our views of others and in this sense, can include stereotypes and prejudices, among other things, or, by contrast, more favourable views of certain groups of people. This form of bias is sometimes referred to as implicit bias. Often, individuals are not aware of the implicit biases they hold, and in this way, implicit bias can also be unconscious bias. Where biases can become problematic is when they are left unchecked and result in others being treated differently, and especially unfairly.
